AI Search Optimization (GEO): A Practical Guide

AI search optimization — often called generative engine optimization, or GEO — is the practice of shaping content and entity signals so that AI-powered answer systems (Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and similar tools) surface and cite you accurately, rather than optimizing purely for a ranked list of links.

How GEO differs from traditional SEO

Traditional SEO optimizes for a ranking position on a results page. GEO optimizes for something narrower and harder to game: being selected as a trustworthy source an AI system chooses to summarize or cite when answering a question, often without a click ever happening.

What AI systems look for

  • Clear, unambiguous entity definitions — who or what you are, stated consistently
  • Structured, factual content that is easy to extract and summarize
  • Corroboration from independent, authoritative sources rather than self-published claims alone
  • Consistency of facts across the web, since conflicting information reduces confidence

Practical GEO tactics

Much of GEO overlaps with fundamentals that predate it: strong entity SEO, a properly sourced Wikipedia presence, and consistent facts across social profiles and press. What is new is the emphasis on being quotable — writing in clear, factual statements that an AI system can lift directly rather than needing to interpret.

Where GEO and entity SEO overlap

AI systems generally reason about entities, not keywords, which is exactly the model behind entity SEO and Knowledge Graph optimization. Investing in those fundamentals is currently the most reliable way to prepare for AI-driven search, since both traditional and generative engines reward the same underlying signals: clarity, consistency and independent corroboration.
